Description of key information

Hydrolysis:

There isn't any available data about the hydrolysis of the substance. However, based on the structure of the substance it is possible to conclude that, in the environment, hydrolysis will not contribute to the degradation of BAB.

The structure of BAB is a benzene brached alkyl molecule. It is not expected that the branched alkyl moiety will undergo hydrolysis due to the carbon-carbon bond is very stable and will not be cleaved by a nucleophilic atac of the water molecule. It is not expected neither that the double bond carbon-carbon present in the moiety benzene will undergo a hydrolytic cleavage.

Phototransformation in air, water and soil:

There aren't data available about the phototransformation of BAB in air, water or soil. Based on the structure of the substance it is possible to conclude that the substance will not be subject to phototransformation.

Direct photolysis: The similar substance LAB do not appear to undergo direct photolysis: less than 1% degradation occurred when acetonitrile solutions of Alkylate 215 were exposed to direct sunlight for 14 days (from ECB (1997), OECD (2002)). Due to the structural similitude this conclusion is extrapolated to BAB.

Indirect photolysis: Half-life in air: AOP v1.92, in EPIsuite, predicts a half-life ranging 5-11 hours in the atmosphere due to reaction with oxygen radicals. No reaction with ozone is anticipated. Based on this, persistence in the atmosphere is negligible and atmospheric transport to the ocean is unlikely. Degradation by ozone can not be estimated by QSARs for this class of compounds.
