Endpoint:
biodegradation in water: ready biodegradability
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is inorganic
Conclusions:
As an inorganic substance with the chemical structure "C", carbon black can not be used as a carbon source and will not be biodegraded by microorganisms. The generally accepted guidelines for the examination of the biodegradability of substances (i.e., OECD- and EU-guidelines) can be used only for organic substances. A biodegradation study is scientifically unjustified

Description of key information

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the ready biodegradability study (required in section 9.2.1.1.) does not need to be conducted as the substance is inorganic.

As an inorganic substance with the chemical structure "C", bulk forms of carbon black are not biodegraded by microorganisms. The generally accepted guidelines for the examination of the biodegradability of substances (i.e., OECD-and EU-guidelines) can be used only for organic substances. A biodegradation study is scientifically unjustified.
