Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Administrative data

Endpoint:
biodegradation in water: ready biodegradability
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: see 'Remark'
Remarks:
The data comes from a report of NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS NOTIFICATION AND ASSESSMENT SCHEME, which was published by Australian Commission. Also the test using OECD TGD was performed by Mitsubisi-kasei Institute of Environmental Science in Japan. Due to these the reliability of the data can be classified as reliable with restrictions.

Details on results:
Biological oxygen demand (BOD) measurements after 28 days incubation of the test substance with sewage sludge indicated a maximum of 6% degradation, while analytical determinations of the residual compound in the BOD bottles indicated a maximum of 3% degradation.

BOD5 / COD results

Results with reference substance:
The reference compound aniline, was 72% degraded over a 28-day test period.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

not specified
Interpretation of results:
other: not readily biodegradable.
Conclusions:
The result of this test indicates that the BDP is not readily biodegradable.
Executive summary:

A test for ready biodegradability conducted according to the Modified MITI (OECD Test Guideline 301C) indicated that the chemical only very slowly degraded under the conditions of the test (Iwami S, 1994). Biological oxygen demand (BOD) measurements after 28 days incubation of the test substance with sewage sludge indicated a maximum of 6% degradation, while analytical determinations of the residual compound in the BOD bottles indicated a maximum of 3% degradation. The reference compound aniline, was 72% degraded over a 28-day test period. The result of this test indicates that the BDP is not readily biodegradable.
