- The toxic potential of the test substance diethyl carbonate towards Daphnia magna STRAUS was evaluated in this study. The main study was performed as a limit test at 100 mg/L. Twenty daphnia were exposed to the test substance for 48 hours in a static, closed test system. Counts of daphnia after 24 and 48 hours showed no immobilisation in the treatment group. The determined 24h- and 48h-NOEC for the test substance diethyl carbonate was ≥ 100 mg/L.
Reference
The correlation between measured and nominal concentration was very good (103 % recovery of the start concentration after 48h). Therefore the determination of the biological results was based on the nominal concentration. In the control and treatment, none of the daphnia died or showed any signs of abnormal behaviour throughout the test (NOEC 24 h, 48 h ≥ 100 mg/L, 24 h, 48 h EC100i > 100 mg/L). In the positive control group (K2Cr2O7) immobility was 15 % at a concentration of 1.0 mg/L and 100 % at 3.0 mg/L.

The authors of the short-term-toxicity study on Daphnia (48 h) evaluated for the test substance diethyl carbonate a NOEC ≥ 100 mg/L. Based on this result the author of this IUCLID data set assumed that the corresponding EC50 should be >> 100 mg/L (much greater than 100 mg/L).
