Appearance / physical state / colour

Benzenediamine, ar-methyl-, polymer with 2-methyloxirane and oxirane is a red-brown liquid (Currenta, 2008).

 

Melting point / freezing point

There are two valid studies on the melting/freezing point of Benzenediamine, ar-methyl-, polymer with 2-methyloxirane and oxirane (Currenta 2009, Laus 2009). While both studies give that there is no melting point the study of Laus company (2009) gives a melting range: >= -16.6 °C to <= -11.6 °C. Thus, the study of Laus (2009) is taken forward to describe the key parameter "melting point" of Diaminotoluene, ethoxylated and propoxylated. 

 

Boiling point

There are two valid and reliable studies on the boiling point of Benzenediamine, ar-methyl-, polymer with 2-methyloxirane and oxirane (Currenta 2009, Laus 2009). The study of Laus (2009) is taken to describe the key parameter "boiling point" of as this study gives the pressure at which the boiling point is determined: 320 °C at >= 986 to <= 995 hPa.

 

Density

The relative density D20/4 of Benzenediamine, ar-methyl-, polymer with 2-methyloxirane and oxirane is 1.097 at 20°C (Currenta, 2009).

 

Particle size distribution (Granulometry)

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the study does not need to be conducted as Benzenediamine, ar-methyl-, polymer with 2-methyloxirane and oxirane is marketed or used in a non solid or granular form.

 

Vapour pressure

The vapour pressures of Lupranol VP 9345 were calculated to be 0.000201 Pa at 20°C and 0.000283 Pa at 25°C, according to OECD guideline 104 and EU method A.4 (LAUS GmbH, 2009).

 

Partition coefficient

The structure-fragment calculation method indicates a log Pow range of 0.42 to 2.30 for components of this UVCB mixture. The upper limit value of log Pow = 2.30 is used to conservatively represent partitioning of the components of this UVCB substance in the chemical safety assessment (West, 2010).

 

Water solubility

Benzenediamine, ar-methyl-, polymer with 2-methyloxirane and oxirane is soluble in demineralized water at 20°C in each ratio to clear homogenous solutions (Currenta, 2009). 

 

Surface tension

There are at least two studies that could be used to give the surface tension of Benzenediamine, ar-methyl-, polymer with 2-methyloxirane and oxirane (Currenta 2009, Laus 2009, Bayer 1996). Both studies indicate that the substance is surface active. While Currenta (2009) gives the surface tension to be 53.7 mN/m, Laus (2009) give a range: >= 42.74 mN/m <= 43.28 mN/m. Thus, Laus (2009) was taken forward to describe the key parameter "surface tension" of Benzenediamine, ar-methyl-, polymer with 2-methyloxirane and oxirane since this study gives the lowest value: 42.74 mN/m.

 

Flash point

There are two valid studies that can be used to give the flashpoint of Benzenediamine, ar-methyl-, polymer with 2-methyloxirane and oxirane. Currenta (2009) gives a flashpoint of 215.5°C at 1000 hPa and Laus (2009) gives a flash point of 212.5 °C at 1013 hPa (Laus, 2009). Since the study of Laus (2009) gives the lower flash point of 212.5 °C at 1013 hPa (at a higher substance purity) this value is taken forward to describe to key parameter "flash point" of Benzenediamine, ar-methyl-, polymer with 2-methyloxirane and oxirane.

 

Auto flammability

The study of Currenta (2009) gives the auto flammability/self-ignition temperature of Benzenediamine, ar-methyl-, polymer with 2-methyloxirane and oxirane, as 380°C at 996 hPa when tested according to EC Test Procedure A 15 (DIN 51794). This result is supported by a study of Bayer (2000) that gives the auto flammability/self-ignition temperature as 395°C when tested according to EC-test procedure A 15 (DIN 51794). Thus, Currenta (2009) is taken to describe the key parameter "auto flammability" of Benzenediamine, ar-methyl-, polymer with 2-methyloxirane and oxirane: 380°C at 996 hPa.

 

Flammability

Burning rate, solid:

According to REACH legislation, Annex VII, column II flammability does not need to be conducted since the substance is a liquid. Flammability for liquids is expressed as flash point.

Contact with water:

‘Polyether T 460' did not ignite spontaneously with water and did not liberate gases in hazardous amounts when tested according to EC Test Procedure A 12. The applied testing method is identical to the testing method with UN -Manual ‘Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods – Manual of Tests and Criteria’ (fourth revised edition) Test N.5 (UN 33.4.14).

With application of EC-Guideline 1272/2008 (Regulation on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures, CLP) Annex 1, chapter 2.12 the criteria for classification ‘Polyether T 460’ as ‘substance which in contact with water emit flammable gases’ are not fulfilled.

Pyrophoric properties:

The molecular structure of the substance does not contain functional groups that might lead to pyrophoricity. Therefore it is considered justified to omit the study.

 

Explosiveness

The structural formula of the test item (see page 10) contains none of the functional groups quoted in ‘Recommendations On The Transport Of Dangerous Goods – Manual of Tests and Criteria’ (fourth revised edition, appendix 6, table A 6.1) or ‘Bretherick’s – Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards’ (6th Edition, Volume 2, p 128 ff) which may indicate explosive properties. Therefore, it can be concluded by expert judgement that ‘Polyether T 460' is not explosive. The determination according to EC Guideline A 14 is not necessary (Currenta, 2009).

        

 

Oxidising properties

Data waiving: Benzenediamine, ar-methyl-, polymer with 2-methyloxirane and oxirane has no oxidizing properties when tested according to EC Test Procedure A 21 (Currenta, 2009)

 

Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products,

Data waiving: According to Column 1 of Annex IX (EU REACH), testing is only required if the stability of the substance is considered to be critical. The guidance defines potentially critical as: (i) for solubility measurement (e.g. for octanol water distribution), (ii) for fortification or calibration standards, (iii) for dosing using a solvent in ecotoxicity studies, and (iv) for sample preparation in for analytical verification or monitoring programs. None of the above applies to the substance. Therefore testing of stability in organic solvents is deemed scientifically unjustified. 

 

pH

The pH value of Polyether is 10.5 at 22°C (Bayer, 2002).

 

Dissociation constant

The homologous components of this UVCB substance possess ionizable amino and hydroxy groups whose estimated pKa values are calculated (amino groups) to be 1.3 and 6.3 for the lowest- as well as 1.4 to 6.3 and 14.1 to 14.7 for the highest molecular weitght homologues, as well as for (hydroxy groups) 14.7 (one group) for the lowest and 14.1 - 14.7 for the highest molecular weight homologue (total of four hydroxy groups). Pka values < 2 and > 14 are considere to be irrelevant for the chemical safety assessment (West, 2010).

 

Viscosity

The (dynamic) viscosity of Benzenediamine, ar-methyl-, polymer with 2-methyloxirane and oxirane has no oxidizing properties when tested according to EC Test Procedure A 21 (Currenta, 2009). is specified as η20°C= 15.103 Pa*s and η40°C= 1.483 Pa*s (Currenta, 2009).
