Short term toxicity to fish:
Acute toxicity studies,carried out according to guidelines, reveal 96-hour LC50’s ranging from 0.97 to 5.6 mg/L for fish according to the species considered (Cyprinodon variegatus, Danio rerio,Oncorhynchus mykiss).With one LC50 slightly below 1.00 mg/L DMDS is to be considered as very toxic to fish.
Long term toxicity to fish:
Two fish early-life stage studies have been carried-out, one on the freshwater fish Pimephales promelas , the other on the marine water fish Cyprinodon variegatus. The NOECs were respectively 0.936 and 0.473 mg/L.
Short term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:
Acute toxicity studies of DMDS on aquatic invertebrates, carried out for some of them according to guidelines, reveal 48-hour EC50’s ranging from 1.82 and 7.0 mg/L for freshwater and 96-hour EC50’s ranging from 5 to 14 mg/L for marine water according to the species considered (Daphnia magna,Americamysis bahia,Crassostrea virginica).DMDS is considered as toxic to invertebrates.
Long term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:
Effect on reproduction of Daphnia magna has been examined (OCDE 211). The NOEC was calculated to be 0.0025 mg/L.
For marine water invertebrates, a life-cycle test on Americamysis bahia (OPPTS 850.1350) provided a NOEC = 0.464 mg/L
Toxicity to aquatic algae:
Acute toxicity studies of DMDS on algae and diatoms, carried out according to guidelines, reveal 72-hour ErC50's ranging from 6.7 mg/L for freshwater to 35 mg/L for marine water according to the species considered (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata,Skeletonema costatum,Navicula pelliculosa,Anabaena flos-aquae).Based on the available data set the trend of results significantly indicate that toxicity threshold (ErC50) is under 10 mg/L and therefore DMDS is considered as toxic to algae.
Toxicity to aquatic plants other than algae:
In 2008, an acute toxicity study of DMDS to Duckweed (Lemna gibbaG3) was carried out by Minderhout T, Kendall TZ and Krueger HO according to OECD Guideline 221, EPA OPPTS 850.4400 and GLP requirements. Based on the results of this study, EC 50 - 7d determined, based on frond number, was of 31 mg a.i./L. NOAEC - 7h was of 5.5 mg a.i./L and LOEC was of 12 mg a.i./L. EC 50 - 7h, based on biomass, was of 46 mg a.i./L, EC50 - 7d, based on growth rate and frond number, was of 36 mg a.i./L, and EC50 - 7d, based on growth rate and biomass, was of 75 mg a.i./L.
Toxicity to microorganisms:
One study made according to OECD 209 is available to evaluate toxicity of dimethyl disulfide to microorganisms. No inhibition of activated sludge respiration was recorded up to the high concentration of 1 g/L.
