The partition coefficient of Sodium 2 -hydroxyethanesulphonate can not be determined using the Shake-flask (OECD test guideline No. 107) and the HPLC (OECD test guideline No. 117) method. However, according to Directive 92/69/EEC (O.J. L383 A), Annex 1 (calculation / estimation methods) the value of the partition coefficient can be estimated by the use of the solubilities of the test substance in the pure solvents. Solubilities were determined according OECD test guideline 105 using the shake flask method. The partition coefficient was estimated to be log Pow = -4.6.
This low value indicates that sodium isethionate is very unlikely to bioaccumulate.
This estimate is being supported by an even lower calculated partition coefficient using the software KOWWIN from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The calculation resulted in a log Pow of -5.5.
