Description of key information

Significant accumulation in organisms is not to be expected.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, the study need not be conducted since the substance and its hydrolysis product have a log Kow less or equal than 3. Based on the log Pow of 2.47 calculated for octanoyl chloride bioaccumulation is not to be expected in aquatic organisms. However the test substance rapidly hydrolyses and forms octanoic acid which has a log Pow of 3.03 (BASF SE, 2009). This value refers to the uncharged molecule, however, octanoic acid has log D values ranging from 2.977 to - 1.080 in a pH range from 4 to 9. Therefore, bioaccumulation is not expected in aquatic organisms.
