At 20°C and 101.3 kPa, Partially unsaturated IQAC, DMS quaternised is a solid paste. The melting point of the substance is 76.0 °C. At ca. 310 °C the substance starts boiling. Simultaneous decomposition occurs.
The relative density of is 1.037 g/cm³ at 20.1 °C. Testing of the substance for particle size distribution (granulometry) is technically not feasible, as the substance is a solid paste.
In a study conducted compatible with EU Method A.4 (Vapour Pressure) and using the vapour pressure balance method, a vapour pressure of 0.011 Pa at 25°C was determined (mean of 10 measurements). Based on the ionic structure of the test substance, however, the results are questionable. The relative high vapour pressure might be caused by residual solvent present in the test sample. A vapour pressure of 7.5 x 10E-22 Pa at 25°C was calculated using EPI-Suite v4.00. Due to missing information about the applicability of the calculation model the result should be treated with care. From a scientific point of view, however, this result seems to be more realistic taking into account the chemical structure of the substance.
The log Kow of partially unsaturated IQAC, DMS quaternised was calculated from experimentally derived solubility in n-octanol and in water. The log Kow is 4.7 at 22 °C. The log Kow calculated by EPIWIN should not be used for the assessment, because partially unsaturated IQAC, DMS quaternised is ionic. EPIWIN does not take into account the ionic structure. The log Kow deduced from the results oft the HPLC Method is not regarded as valid, since the method is not suitable for surfactants as outlined in OECD Guideline 117 and EU Method A.8. Deduced from the BCF value of 10.7 (see 4.3), the log Kow should be lower than 4.7. However correlation between log Kow and BCF is not linear for substances with high molecular weight and high log Kow.
In a study conducted according to OECD Guideline 105 (Water Solubility) and EU Method A.6 (Water Solubility) and using the slow-stirring method a water solubility of 2.6 mg/L at 22°C and pH 5.1 was determined. According to the classification scheme, the test substance can be considered as slightly soluble.
According to the Pendant Drop Method, the surface tension of the closely related read across substance Oleic-acid based IQAC, was 27.0 mN/m at 23°C and a concentration of 0.5 wt%. The surface tension of Partially unsaturated IQAC, DMS quaternised, is assumed to be equal to that of the Oleic-acid based IQAC, as the difference in chain length and the number and location of double bonds are only marginal. The surface tension is not influenced by that fact.
Partially unsaturated IQAC, DMS quaternised is not auto flammable. The substance showed neither pyrophoric properties nor the potential to form flammable gases when in contact with water or humid air. The appraisal of the molecular structure indicates no risk with respect to pyrophoric properties or the potential of evolving flammable gases in contact with water or humid air. In addition, during the conduction of other tests (e. g. water solubility) the test item did not show any spontaneous ignition or formation of flammable gases. According to EC test guideline A.14 the substance has no oxidising properties.
The substance is stable in organic solvents. In water, the substance is hydrolytically unstable (half-life less than 12 hours). Partially unsaturated IQAC, DMS quaternised is an ionic salt and dissociates rapidly in water to form the organic quaternary imidazolium cation and the inorganic sulphate anion. Since no analytical method is available for the determination of the undissociated test item, the conduct of further experimental verification was not considered to be technically or scientifically feasible.
