Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

No test was performed on skin and eye irritation/corrosion, as the complex is composed of boron trifluoride and orthophosphoric acid. Both substances are considered as corrosive to skin and eyes.

Additional information

The test substance shows a corrosive potential in the Corrositex® - Skin Corrosion Test (OECD Guideline 435) and should be assigned to UN GHS skin corrosivity subcategory 1A. The test substance is a complex composed of boron trifluoride and orthophosphoric acid. Both substances are classified as skin and eye corrosive. This is further proven in the supporting study for acute oral toxicity with a orthophosphoric acid where the animals developed strong chemical burns of the mucosal membranes in the stomach.Clinical signs of respiratory distress were observed during short term and long term inhalation toxicity studies with the read across substances BF3 or BF3 dihydrate, even at low concentrations.

Taking the acute inhalation results of the read across substances (see IUCLID chapter 7.2.2) into account, it can be assumed that the test substance will lead to respiratory irritation when inhaled.

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: corrosive

Effects on eye irritation: corrosive

Effects on respiratory irritation: irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

Dangerous Substance Directive (67/548/EEC)

The available data are considered reliable and suitable for classification purposes under 67/548/EEC. As a result the substance needs to be classified and labelled as corrosive to eye and skin (R35 Causes severe burns) and irritant to the respiratory tract (R37 Irritating to respiratory system) under Directive 67/548/EEC, as amended for the 31st time in Directive 2009/2/EC.

Classification, Labelling, and Packaging Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008

The available data are considered reliable and suitable for classification purposes under Regulation 1272/2008. As a result the substance needs to be classified and labelled as corrosive to eye and skin (H314 Causes severe skin burns and eye damage) and as irritant to the respiratory tract (H335 May cause respiratory irritation) under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, as amended for the sixth time in Regulation EC No 605/2014.
