Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Read-across from MoO3 to MoO2. In a test for oxidising properties with pure molybdenum oxide (MoO3), both mixtures of the test item MoO3 with cellulose (4:1 and 1:1) had higher mean burning times compared to the reference mixture in the ratio 3:7. It is concluded that the test item pure MoO3 has no oxidizing properties.

Read-across is possible from pure MoO3 to MoO2, since MoO2 contains molybdenum in a lower oxidation state than MoO3 and a lower mass fraction of oxygen. Based on this it appears scientifically implausible, that molybdenum dioxide would exhibit oxidising properties which would be sufficient for classification, as the comparable compounds MoO3 does not.
