Description of key information

The long-term toxicity to invertebrates of constituents of Alchisor TAL 123 has been documented within this dossier. Adequate reliable measured data exists for long-term toxicity to invertebrates to constituents of Alchisor TAL 123 (namely, Hydrocarbons C11-C14, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, aromatics (2-25%), undecane-1-ol, and dodecan-1-ol). In a protective approach the most sensitive study result from across the three constituents has been identified and used to address this ecotoxicological endpoint. The most sensitive study result from across the three substances has been identified as a reliable study with dodecan-1-ol (Schaefers, 2005), which reports a NOEC for long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates of 0.014 mg/L. Consequently this value will be taken as the long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates endpoint for Alchisor TAL.

Additional information

Alchisor TAL 123 can be characterised according to three constituents: Hydrocarbons C11-C14, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, aromatics (2-25%), undecan-1 -ol and dodecan-1 -ol. Study data, where available, for each constituent has been evaluated and considered together. Several reliable (Klimisch 1 or 2) long-term toxicity studies in invertebrates have been conducted for constituents of Alchisor TAL 123 (namely, Hydrocarbons C11-C14, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, aromatics (2-25%), undecan-1-ol and dodecan-1-ol) and are included in this dossier. The reliable studies included for constituents of Alchisor TAL 123 are briefly described below. In a protective approach, the most sensitive study result from across the three constituents will be identified and used to address the hazard endpoint in question.

Hydrocarbons C11-C14, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, aromatics (2-25%)

Four reliable (Klimisch 1) long-term toxicity study results for invertebrates were available for Hydrocarbons C11-C14, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, aromatics (2-25%) all which were provide by Exxon Biomedical Sciences, Inc (2005) GLP compliant OECD 211 study with Hydrocarbons C11-C14, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, aromatics (2-25%) was conducted where Daphnia magna were exposed for 21 days to nominal loading concentrations of the test chemical. The EL10 based on reproduction was 0.316 mg/l. The EC10 based on reproduction was 0.109 mg/l. Reproduction was more sensitive than growth and survival, resulting in a NOELR of 0.28 mg/l and a NOEC of 0.097 mg/l.

Undecan-1-ol

One reliable (Klimisch 2) long-term toxicity study result for invertebrates was available for undecan-1-ol. Schafers et al., (2009) presented predicted values for D. magna using a multiple partitioning model. A calculated 21-day NOEC of 0.044-0.17 mg/L was presented which is the most sensitive result for long-term toxicity of undecan-1-ol to invertebrates.

Dodecan-1-ol

Two reliable (Klimisch 1 or 2) long-term toxicity study result for invertebrates was available for dodecan-1-ol. Ghul (1992) conducted a reliable (Klimisch 2) GLP compliant study comparable to OECD guideline 202 by exposing D. magna for 21days with a resulting NOEC of 1 mg/L. Schaefers (2005) conducted a reliable (Klimisch 1) GLP compliant OECD 211 study where D. magna were exposed for 21 days. The NOEC, based on reproduction was 0.014 mg/L, which is the most sensitive long-term toxicity result for dodecan-1-ol.
