Two studies investigating the ready biodegradability of 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediyl dioleate (CAS No. 25151-96-6) are available. The GLP key study was conducted under aerobic conditions according to ISO guideline 10708 (BODIS-Test) using sewage effluents, obtained from a domestic STP, as inoculum (Küster & Wierich, 2000). A test concentration of 100 mg/L (ThOD) was applied. Based on O2 consumption a mean biodegradation of 75% was observed after a test period of 28 days. The 14-day window was passed. Hence, the substance is readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria.

This result is confirmed by a supporting GLP study, which was similarly conducted under aerobic conditions according to ISO guideline 10708 (BODIS-Test) using sewage effluents, obtained from a domestic STP, as inoculum (Richterich & Berger, 1996). Based on O2 consumption a biodegradation of 71% was observed after a test period of 28 days. The 14-day window was not passed. For substances with different chain lengths the 14-day window should not be used for the interpretation of results. It is possible that a sequential biodegradation occurred which might have resulted in a prolonged lag-Phase and therefore a slower biodegradation period, although the test substance was biodegraded in a large amount after the test duration. In this case the pass level can be applied after 28 days and therefore the test substance is considered to be readily biodegradable.
