Description of key information

Aluminium nitride is a solid inorganic substance, which forms blue-white hexagonal crystals. It has a melting point of 3000 °C, the density at room temperature is 3.255 g/cm³. The test EU A.16 aluminium nitride revealed no self-ignition at temperatures up to 400 ºC. The following particle size distribution could be determined by laser diffraction analysis: D90 <3.2µm; D50 <1.1µm; D10 <0.25 µm.

In a transformation/dissolution test aluminium nitride proved to be slightly soluble, releasing maximum aluminium concentrations of 1087.1 µg/L and total ammonia (NH3) of maximally 2048 µg/L (at 100 mg/L nominal loading after 7 days).

Aluminium nitride is non-flammable and non-explosive under the conditions of the test according to VDI guideline 2263.
