Administrative data
First-aid measures
General Advice: Get medical attention if any discomfort develops. Show this safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance.
Inhalation: Remove from exposure and allow to rest in fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration Seek medical attention if discomfort persists.
Ingestion: Rinse mouth thoroughly with water and provide fresh air. Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
Eye Contact: Remove any contact lenses. Irrigate with clean water taking care to rinse under eyelids. If irritation persists, continue flushing for 15 minutes rinsing from time to time under eyelids. If discomfort continues, consult a physician.
Skin Contact: Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin. Wash skin with soap and water. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

Fire-fighting measures
- Suitable extinguishing media
Use Class D dry powder extinguishing agent. Use fire-extinguishing media appropriate to surrounding materials. Do not use water, carbon dioxide or halogenated extinguishing media.
- Special hazards arising from the mixture
This product does not present fire or explosion hazard as shipped. Small chips, fine turnings and dust from processing may be ignitable when exposed to heat, spark or flame. May react with water under fire conditions, liberating flammable hydrogen gas. May emit fumes of samarium oxide under fire conditions.
- Advice for firefighters
Full face, self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing must be worn in case of fire.

Pick up and arrange disposal without creating dust. Sweep up and shovel. If cleaning up fines or dust use only non-sparking tools and natural bristle brushes. Exposure controls / personal protection
Exposure Controls
- Appropriate Engineering Controls:
Handle in an enclosed, controlled process under dry argon when possible. Ensure adequate ventilation to maintain exposures below occupational limits. Whenever possible the use of local exhaust ventilation or other engineering controls is the preferred method of controlling exposure to airborne dust and fume to meet established occupational exposure limits. Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Respiratory Protection: Provide adequate ventilation. In case of inadequate ventilation or risk of inhalation of dust, use type N95 (US) or type P1 (EN 143) dust masks. Use respirators and components tested and approved under appropriate government standards such as NIOSH (US) or CEN (EU). Seek advice from local supervisor
- Hand Protection: Handle with gloves. Gloves must be inspected prior to use. Use proper glove removal technique (without touching glove's outer surface) to avoid skin contact with this product. Dispose of contaminated gloves after use in accordance with applicable laws and good laboratory practices. Wash and dry hands. The selected protective gloves should satisfy the specifications of EU Directive 89/686/EEC and the standard EN 374 derived from it.
- Eye Protection: Use equipment for eye protection tested and approved under appropriate government standards such as NIOSH (US) or EN 166(EU).
- Skin & Body Protection: Wear suitable protective clothing as protection against contamination.
- General: Use personal protective equipment as required. PPE should be chosen according to the CEN standards and in discussion with the supplier of PPE.
