Description of key information

The short term toxicity of ditantalum pentaoxide to fish was determined to be above the limits of solubility, according to a key study (Caspers, 2001) which was performed according to GLP and the standardised guideline EU Method C.1 (equivalent of OECD 203).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The key study (Caspers, 2001) was conducted in line with GLP and standardised guidelines with a sufficient level of detail to assess the quality of the study. Brachydanio rerio were exposed to the test material, at the limit of solubility 1 mg/L (nominal concentration), for a duration of 96 hours. The test fish were observed for mortality which was the basis of evaluation. No mortalities were observed during the 96 hours, so it was concluded that the LC₅₀ ≥ 1 mg/L. The study was performed to a good standard and was assigned a reliability score of 1 using the principles for assessing data quality as set out in Klimisch (1997).

Oshioka (2004) has been provided as supporting data. This study was conducted according to GLP and standardised guideline OECD 203. Ten Oryzias latipes fish were exposed to the test material in a limit test at 500 mg/L for 96 hours. Under the conditions

of the test no mortalities were observed. The LC₅₀ was determined to be > 500 mg/L a figure which is significantly above the expected limits of solubility. The study was assigned a reliability score of 2 using the principles for assessing data quality as set out in Klimisch (1997).
