Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Ni oxyhydroxide is considered to be slightly soluble in water (0.1-100 mg/l). This data is derived from the bioaccessibility data derived in interstitial fluid. The solubility of Ni oxyhydroxide in interstitial fluid at 37°C is 14.36 mg/l monitoring Nickel. Studies characterizing the water solubility of Ni monoxide and Ni dihydroxide are supporting this data.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

37 °C

Additional information

There are data on the bioaccessibility of Ni oxyhydroxide in interstitial fluid available. This data are used to estimate the water solubility of Nickel oxyhydroxide as the method is comparable to the determination of the water solubility. The medium interstitial fluid has a pH of 7.4 and the incubation time is 72 h. The test is conducted at 37°C.

The results of the test showed that Nickel oxyhydroxide is slightly soluble in interstitial fluid. The solubility in interstitial fluid at 37°C is 14.36 mg/l monitoring Nickel.

This data is confirmed by data on the water solubility of Ni dihydroxide and Ni oxide.

The water solubility of Ni dihydroxide has been determined to be 6.80 x 10-5g/l of solution at 20.0 ± 0.5°C monitoring nickel; equivalent to 1.08 x 10-4 g/l of test material based on theoretical nickel content, using the flask method, Method A6 Water Solubility of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008 and Method 105 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, 27 July 1995. Ni dihydroxide is slightly soluble (0.1-100 mg/l)

Furthermore there are data available on the water solubility of green and black Ni monoxide. Black Ni monoxide is reported to be slightly soluble (water solubility 0.00226 g/L), whereas green Ni monoxide is reported to be insoluble (water solubility 0.0000352 g/L).

Therefore Ni oxyhydroxide is considered to be slightly soluble in water based on the bioaccessibility data and confirmed by the data on water solubility of Ni oxide and Ni dihydroxide.
