Description of key information
An in vivo test according OECD 404 is available. Aditionally for the evaluation of the skin corrosion/irritating properties of 1, 1'-(1 ,6-Hexanediyldiimino)bis(1-oxo-methanesulphonic acid), sodium salt (1 :2)(CAS n° 38632-47-2) an artificial 3D-skin model test according to OECD TG 439 was used.
Moreover Isotan LP RJE 69140 [a 31.94 % solution of 1, 1'-(1 ,6-Hexanediyldiimino)bis(1-oxo-methanesulphonic acid), sodium salt (1 :2) with 1-5 % citric acid] was investigated in the artificial 3D-skin model test.
An in vivo assay in rabbits according OECD TG 405 for the test material is available. Additionally a Bovine CorneaI Opacity and Permeability Assay (BCOP) with 1,1'-(1 ,6-Hexanediyldiimino)bis[1 -oxomethanesulfonic acid], sodium salt (1 :2) was conducted.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Skin irritation / corrosion
Endpoint conclusion
- Endpoint conclusion:
- no adverse effect observed (not irritating)
Eye irritation
Endpoint conclusion
- Endpoint conclusion:
- no adverse effect observed (not irritating)
Additional information
In an in vivo test according OECD 404 no irritant or corrosive effects were observed on the intact skin of the three female rabbits (strain NZW) after a contact time of 4 hours.
In the in-vitro 3D skin irritation test 1, 1'-(1 ,6-Hexanediyldiimino)bis(1-oxo-methanesulphonic acid), sodium salt (1 :2) was not corrosive and not irritant. LP RJE 69140 (a 31.94 % solution of 1, 1'-(1 ,6-Hexanediyldiimino)bis(1-oxo-methanesulphonic acid), sodium salt (1 :2) with 1-5 % citric acid) was irritating - but not corrosive in the in-vitro 3D skin irritation test. It is concluded that the irritant effect is caused by the citric acid in water solution. When applied the test item as powder, it has no irritant/corrosive properties.
In the in vivo assay in 3 rabbits according OECD 405 no corneal or iridial effects were noted during the study. Grade 1 redness was noted in all treated eyes and grade 1 chemosis was noted in two treated eyes at the 24-hour observation. Grade 1 redness was noted in two treated eyes at the 48-hour observation. One treated eye appeared normal at the 48-hour observation and two treated eyes appeared normal at the 72-hour observation.
According the BCOP assay the test item 1,1'-(1,6-Hexane- diyldiimino)- bis[1-oxo-methanesulfonic acid], sodium salt (1:2) is not corrosive / not severely irritating to the eye.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Due to the results of the in-vitro and in vivo skin irritation/corrosion test a classification of the substance is not justifed.
The test item did not meet the criteria for classification as irritant as a result of the in-vivo eye irritation study and is therefore not irritating to the eye according Council Directive 67/548/EEC and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
