Description of key information
All short-term studies of aquatic toxicity performed on the three trophic levels (algae, aquatic invertebrates, fish) showed NOEC = 100 mg dry salt/L.
In addition no adverse effects were observed up to the maximum tested concentration (10 mg dry salt/L) in a long-term toxicity study on aquatic invertebrates.
The Respiratory Inhibition Test with activated sludge showed a NOEC = 1000 mg dry salt/L.
These results indicate that the substance does not have toxic properties to aquatic organisms.
Additional information
The following experimental studies for short-term aquatic toxicity are available:
- acute toxicity to zebra fish (Brachydanio rerio), 96-hour static test
- acute toxicity to Daphnia magna, 48-hour static test
- inhibitory effect on the growth of the freshwater green algal, 72-hour static test
- 3 hours Respiratory Inhibition test with activated sludge
Moreover a long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates is available.
All studies were performed under GLP conditions, according to the EU Commission Directive 92/69/ and to the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals.
In all the available ecotoxicological studies no adverse effects were observed up to the maximum tested concentrations.
The results demonstrate that, in addition to not meeting the classification criteria to be considered toxic for the environment, the substance is of very low toxicological concern for the aquatic compartment.
