Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

No toxic effects to invertebrates up to the limit of water solubility (WS: < 0.05 mg/L; OECD 202).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The hazard assessment is based on the data currently available. New studies with the registered substance and/or other member substances of the polyol esters group will be conducted in the future. The finalised studies will be included in the technical dossier as soon as they becomeavailable, and the hazard assessment will be re-evaluated accordingly.

Two studies investigating the toxicity of Fatty acids C5-10 esters with dipentaerythritol (CAS 70983-72-1) to aquatic invertebrates are available. In the first study the short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates was investigated according to OECD 202 using Daphnia magna as test organism under semi-static conditions. A nominal test concentration of 1060 mg/L (prepared as WAF) was tested. Analytical monitoring was not performed. No immobilisation was observed in the treatment throughout the test period of 48 h. Hence, the 48 h-EL50 is determined to be > 1060 mg/L.

The second study was investigated according to ISO 634115 using Daphnia magna as test organism under static conditions. Nominal concentrations of 10, 18, 32, 56 and 100 mg/L (prepared as WAF) were tested. Analytical monitoring was not performed. After 48 h an EL50 of 78 mg/L determined.Due to the fact that a test substance film was observed and Daphnids trapped at the surface were observed after 24 h at 100 mg/L the test has got a reliability of 3.

In order to fulfil the standard information requirements, set out in Annex VII - IX, in accordance with Annex XI, 1.5, of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, read-across from structurally related source substances was conducted. The source substance used is Dipentaerythritol with fatty acids, C5 and C9iso (CAS 647028-25-9) showing similar physicochemical, toxicological and ecotoxicological properties and follow a regular pattern as a result of structural similarity. No effects were observed up to the limit of water solubility for Dipentaerythritol with fatty acids, C5 and C9iso (CAS 647028-25-9).

Based on the result from one structurally related read-across substance (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which is characterized by a similar ecotoxicological profile, and one study for the target substance itself, it can be concluded that Fatty acids C5-10 esters with dipentaerythritol (CAS 70983-72-1) will not exhibit toxic effects to aquatic invertebrates up to the limit of water solubility.
