Data investigating the aquatic toxicity ofFatty acids, C8-10-(even numbered), esters with pentaerythritol and adipic acid (EC 948-383-1)are not available. Therefore, a read-across to structurally related substances with similar ecotoxicological profiles was conducted for the following endpoints: Short-term toxicity to fish, Short- and Long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates, Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria and Toxicity to microorganisms. Based on the high degree of similarity between the structural and physico-chemical properties of the target and source substances, the source substances are considered suitable representatives for the assessment of the aquatic toxicity of the target substance. A detailed analogue approach justification is provided in the technical dossier (please refer to IUCLID Section 13).
For the endpoint short-term toxicity to fish, aread-across to the structurally and chemically closely related source substance Fatty acids, C8-10, mixed esters with adipic acid and trimethylolpropane (CAS 95912-89-3) and Decanoic acid, mixed esters with heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, pentaerythritol and valeric acid (CAS 71010-76-9)was conducted. Acute toxicity of the source substances to fish was not observed. The lowestLC50 (96 h) was determined as > 0.704 mg/L (arithmetic mean measured concentration).Based on the available results from this read-across, it can be concluded thatFatty acids, C8-10-(even numbered), esters with pentaerythritol and adipic acid (EC 948-383-1)shows no acute toxicity to fish up to the limit of saturation (< 165 µg/L at 20 °C, pH 6.3; OECD Guideline 105, column elution method).
For the endpoint short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates, a read-across to the structurally related source substancesFatty acids, C8-10, mixed esters with adipic acid and trimethylolpropane (CAS 95912-89-3) and Decanoic acid, mixed esters with heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, pentaerythritol and valeric acid (CAS 71010-76-9)was conducted. The lowest measured EL50 (48h) was determined to be > 100 mg/L (nominal). Based on the available results from this read-across, it can be concluded thatFatty acids, C8-10-(even numbered), esters with pentaerythritol and adipic acid (EC 948-383-1)shows no acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates up to the limit of water solubility (< 165 µg/L at 20 °C, pH 6.3; OECD Guideline 105, column elution method).
For the endpoint long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates, a read-across to the structurally related source substancesFatty acids, C8-10, mixed esters with adipic acid and trimethylolpropane (CAS 95912-89-3) and Decanoic acid, mixed esters with heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, pentaerythritol and valeric acid (CAS 71010-76-9) was conducted. The lowest NOEC (21 d) was determined as≥1 mg/L (WAF)(immobility, reproduction). Based on the available results from this read-across, it can be concluded thatFatty acids, C8-10-(even numbered), esters with pentaerythritol and adipic acid (EC 948-383-1)shows no long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates up to the limit of water solubility (< 165 µg/L at 20 °C, pH 6.3; OECD Guideline 105, column elution method).
For the endpoint Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria, a read-across to the structurally related source substanceDecanoic acid, mixed esters with heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, pentaerythritol and valeric acid (CAS 71010-76-9)was conducted. TheEL50 (72 h) was determined as > 100 mg/L and the NOELR (72 h) as≥100 mg/L. Based on the available results from this read-across, it can be concluded thatFatty acids, C8-10-(even numbered), esters with pentaerythritol and adipic acid (EC 948-383-1) shows no toxicity to aquatic algae up to the limit of water solubility (< 165 µg/L at 20 °C, pH 6.3; OECD Guideline 105, column elution method).
For the endpoint Toxicity to microorganisms, a read-across to the structurally related source substanceDecanoic acid, mixed esters with heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, pentaerythritol and valeric acid (CAS 71010-76-9)was conducted. AnEC50 > 1000 mg/L (nominal) and EC10 > 1000 mg/L (nominal) were determined.Based on the available results from this read-across, it can be concluded thatFatty acids, C8-10-(even numbered), esters with pentaerythritol and adipic acid (EC 948-383-1) is non-inhibitory of aquatic microorganisms activity.
Based on the study results from available source substances, it can be concluded thatFatty acids, C8-10-(even numbered), esters with pentaerythritol and adipic acid (EC 948-383-1)is not toxic to freshwater organisms up to the limit of the water solubility (< 165 µg/L at 20 °C, pH 6.3; OECD Guideline 105, column elution method).
