Description of key information

No experimental determination of partition coefficient has been carried out according to the fact that the substance is inorganic. A recent article (Petersen, 2010) has shown that the standard OECD TG 107 is not readily applicable to TMWCNTs and that, contrary to hydrophobic substances there is no relationship between the observed partitioning and the potential for bioaccumulation.

In a recent article, Petersen et al. (Env. Tox. and Chem. 2010, vol. 29, 1106 -1112) address the relevance of octanol-water partitioning to the potential uptake of MWCNTs by organisms. They observe an unusual behaviour when carrying out the OECD TG 107 test (shake flask method) in that the MWCNTs do not cross the interface between to 2 medias and therefore do not partition according to lipophilicity. In addition, there is no relationship between partitioning and uptake by organisms (worms), with apparently no absorption across the gut tissues.

Consequently logKow can be considered not only as a technical issue with TMWCNTs but also as a poor descriptor of bioaccumulation potential.
