Flammability
Administrative data
- Endpoint:
- flammable solids
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 2003
- Reliability:
- 2 (reliable with restrictions)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- other: Although the study was not performed according to an OECD or EC guideline, the used methodology is adequate and sufficient to conclude on the 'flammability solids' endpoint. However, no information on purity of the substance is reported.

Results and discussion
Flammable solids
- Key result
- Test procedure:
- burning rate test: preliminary screening test
- Remarks on result:
- substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period
Any other information on results incl. tables
Results: Not readily combustible substance of Division 4.1. Interpretation of the results: Powders are to be considered as readily combustible when the time of burning in any one of the 6 tests carried out according to the test procedure decscribed is less than 45 seconds or the burning rate is greater than 2.2 mm/s. Powders of metals or metal alloys are considered to be readily combustible when they can ignited and the flame on the reaction spreads over the whole sample in 10 minutes or less. Materials, others than metal powders are classified as UN/DOT Division 4.1 (Flammable Solids) when the time of burning of one or more of the test runs is less than 45 seconds. Packaging Group II is assigned if the burning time is less than 45 seconds and the flame passes the wetted zone. Packaging II is assigned to powders of metal or metal alloys if the zone of reaction spreads over the whole lenght of the sample in five minutes or less. Packaging III is assigned to materials other than metal powders, if the burning time is less than 45 seconds and the wetted zone stops the flame propagation for at least 4 minutes. Packaging Group III is asigned to metal powders if rection spreads over the whole lenght of the sample in more than five minutes but not more than ten minutes.
Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Interpretation of results:
- GHS criteria not met
- Conclusions:
- Not readily combustible substance of Division 4.1
