Structural assessment of 2-butoxyethyl methacrylate and its minor constituents was achieved in reference to relevant regulation, namely the Classification, Labelling, and Packaging (CLP) Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, and information outlined in Table A6.1 of Appendix 6, UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods: Manual of Tests and Criteria, 6th Ed. that details a number of structural motifs that are indicative of explosive behaviour in organic material.

According to the assessment for 2-butoxyethyl methacrylate and its minor constituents, the registered substance is not expected to exhibit explosive behaviour due to a lack of structural features associated with explosiveness. Executive summary:

An evaluation of the molecular structure of 2-butoxyethyl methacrylate and its minor constituents was undertaken to establish whether the registered substance contained explosive properties. CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 was referred to in order to establish a screening-style procedure, as well as the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods: Manual of Tests and Criteria, 6th Ed. (Appendix 6), which outlines structural motifs typical of organic material known to give rise to explosive behaviour. The identification of functional groups in 2-butoxyethyl methacrylate that are associated with explosiveness, such as C-C unsaturation (acetylenes, acetylides, 1,2-dienes), C-metal and N-metal (Grignard reagents, organo-lithium compounds), and contiguous N atoms (azides, aliphatic azo compounds, diazonium salts, hydrazines, will reliably signal explosive potential.

2-Butoxyethyl methacrylate does not to contain any halogens, nitrogen, or metals. Oxygen is present within the structure of 2-butoxyethyl methacrylate and its minor constituents, however, the oxygen atoms are not present within chemical groups considered to be associated with explosive properties. C-C unsaturation is present in 2-butoxyethyl methacrylate (i.e. the alkene of the methacrylate group) and in 4-hydroxyanisole present as an aromatic ring, but these functional groups are not considered to confer explosive properties.

As a consequence of this assessment, it can be concluded that 2-butoxyethyl methacrylate and its minor constituents are not expected to possess explosive potential and, therefore, the registered substance does not require classification as an explosive material (CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008).
