Additional information

Four studies are available reporting the short-term toxicity of crotonaldehyde to freshwater invertebrates. No information is available for marine species. Three studies were conducted using Daphnia magna as the test species, and one study was conducted using Gammarus fasciatus. This study reported a 96 -hour LC50 of 2.7 mg/L, based on measured values. The first Daphnia study resulted in an EC50 of 2 mg/L, also based on measured values, and conducted over an exposure period of 48 hours. In the two other studies with Daphnia magna, the exposure period lasted only 24 hours and the toxicity endpoints are related to nominal values. In the first study, the EC50 was 3.9 mg/L, the second one reported an EC50 of 10.75 mg/L. However, the latter is not derived from an experimental result, but is based on a mathematical calculation. It should be handled with care and is therefore be regarded as additional information only. Apart from the calculated value, all EC50 values for Daphnia magna are in the same order of magnitude. Taking also into account the results of the study with Gammarus fasciatus, the EC50 of the 48 hour study with Daphnia magna is the lowest of all endpoints available. This endpoint is therefore regarded as the key parameter.
