Description of key information
Appearance:
On the basis of physical observation and using the sense of smell, Ethyl 2-naphthyl ether was observed to be a white powder.
Melting point:
The melting point determination of Ethyl 2-naphthyl ether (CAS No. 93-18-5) was done following OECD Guideline 102 and according to the metal block capillary method. The test was conducted in replicates and mean melting temperature range was determine to be 35 °C- 37.1°C at 969.3hPa.
Boiling Point:
The boiling point determination of Ethyl 2-naphthyl ether (CAS No. 93-18-5) was done following OECD Guideline 103 and according to the method of Siwoloboff. The boiling point was determine to be greater than 300°C at 968.8 hPa.
Density:
The density of test item Ethyl 2-naphthyl ether (CAS No. 93-18-5)was determined following OECD Guideline 109 and according to the Adapted from ASTM D854-02 using glass pyknometer. The mean density of test item was determine to be 1.2413 g/cm³ at 20°C and 969.7 hPa.
Particle size distribution:
The particle size distribution of test item Ethyl 2-naphthyl ether (CAS No. 93-18-5 ) was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was determine to be in the range of 150 micron to 53 micron.
Vapour pressure:
Data from various modeling databases suggests that the estimated vapour pressure of 2- Ethoxynapthalene at 25 deg C was 0.00389 mm Hg = 0.5182 Pa
Partition coefficient:
Based on the available data from study report, thepartition coefficient n-octanol/water of chemical Ethyl 2-naphthyl ether (CAS No. 93-18-5) was determined by the Reverse Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography method according to OECD Guideline No. 117 for testing of Chemicals. A test item solution was prepared by accurately weighing 4 mg of test item and diluted with ACN up to 10 ml. Thus, the test solution concentration was 400 mg/l. The pH of test substance was 6.23. The reference substances were chosen according to Functional similarity with the test substance and calibration graph was prepared. The reference substances were 4-Methoxyphenol, Phenol, Benzene, 2-Nitrophenol, Nitrobenzene, Naphthalene, Diphenyl ether having Pow value ranging from 1.3 to 4.2. The Log Pow value of the test chemical Ethyl 2-naphthyl ether was determined to be 3.7475 ± 0.0004 at 25°C.
Water solubility:
The water solubility determination of test item Ethyl 2-naphthyl ether (CAS No. 93-18-5) was done as per the OECD guideline 105 by spectrophotometric analytical method as per OECD 101. The solubility of (Ethyl 2-naphthyl ether of 93-18-5 ) in water was determine to be less than 0.01 mg/L in water at 30°C. From the water solubility value Ethyl 2 -naphthyl ether is observed to be insoluble in water.
Solubility in organic solvents / fat solubility:
A study was conducted to determine the solubility of 2 -Ethoxynapthalene in organic solvents.
2-Ethoxynapthalene was determined to be poorly soluble in propylene glycol.
Surface tension:
The study does not need to be conducted because water solubility is below 1 mg/L at 20°C. The water solubility determination of test item Ethyl 2-naphthyl ether (CAS No. 93-18-5) was done as per the OECD guideline 105 by spectrophotometric analytical method as per OECD 101. The solubility of (Ethyl 2-naphthyl ether of 93-18-5 ) in water was determine to be 0.01 mg/L in water at 30°C. From the water solubility value Ethyl 2 -naphthyl ether is observed to be insoluble in water.
Flash point:
The flash point determination of Ethyl 2-naphthyl ether (CAS No. 93-18-5)was done following closed cup method using Pensky-Martens flash point apparatus. The test was conducted in replicates and mean flash point was determine to be 140.6°C at 969.3hPa.
Auto flammability:
The substance is a solid having melting point 37.5 degree C which is less than or equal to 160 deg C. Hence the study need not to be conducted for auto-iginition endpoint and was considered for waiver.
Flammability:
Ethyl 2-naphthyl ether ignites only when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that Ethyl 2-naphthyl ether is flammable only at high temperature of about 950°C. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus Ethyl 2-naphthyl ether was considered non-flammable.
Explosiveness:
The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties
Oxidizing properties:
The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with oxidising properties and hence, the classification precedure does not need to be applied
Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products:
The study does not need to be conducted because the stability of the substance is not considered to be critical.
pH:
The pH determination of test item Ethyl 2-naphthyl ether (CAS No 93-18-5) was done following OECD guideline 122. pH of 1% w/v dispersion was measured with the help of pH meter and it was observed to be 8.03 at 31°C.
Dissociation constant:
The study does not need to be conducted because the substance has no ionic structure.
Viscosity:
The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid
