Description of key information

A 28d study evaluating the chronic toxicity of sediment-incorporated didecyldimethylammonium chloride (CAS 7173 -51 -5)  to Chironomus tentans was submitted as read across data. Test method was based on Guideline U.S. EPA-600/3-75-009. The NOEC 28 days was determined to be 530 mg/kg soil dw. The LC50 was determined to be 2085 mg/soil dw.

A 28d study evaluating the chronic toxicity of sediment-incorporated didecyldimethylammonium chloride (CAS 7173 -51 -5) to Chironomus tentans was submitted as read across data. Test method was based on Guideline U.S. EPA-600/3-75-009. Ten midges larvae were exposed for each of the six replicates per treatment to nominal concentrations of 0, 126, 249, 501, 1000 and 1999 mg/kg dw sediment (active ingredient). Additional “abiotic” replicates were set for analytical purposes. Water column, interstitial water and sediment were sampled on day 0, 14, 28 for analysis of 14C residues. At the end of the test the mean sediment concentrations were 150, 260, 530, 1000 and 2200 mg/kg dw sediment (corresponding to 100-119% of the nominal values), these values were used to express results.

Only in the highest treatment there was a significant effect on survival while at 1000 mg/kg dw sediment was significantly reduced. The NOEC 28 days was determined to be 530 mg/kg sediment dw. The LC50 was determined to be 2085 mg/kg soil dw.
