Materials and methods

Using a mouse bioassay a synthetic metalworking fluid and its major components, including boric acid, were evaluated for sensory and pulmonary irritation. Using respiratory frequency, depression, concentration-response relationships were developed. From such relationships the concentration capable of evoking a 50 % decrease in mean frequency was determined.
