Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference substance:
75-20-7_Calcium Carbide
This impurity is considered relevant for the classification and labelling of the substance
PBT status:
PBT assessment does not apply
Justification:

REACH Annex XIII, PBT assessment, does only apply to organic and metallo-organic compounds. Thus, the PBT assessment does not apply to calcium carbide which is an inorganic substance.

Upon contact with water calcium carbide instantly hydrolysis to calcium hydroxide and acetylene. Like calcium carbide also calcium hydroxide is an inorganic substance, thus PBT assessment does also not apply to calcium hydroxide.

Acetylene is an highly volatile organic gas which is considered to be readily biodegradable and which is assumed to have no significant potential for bioaccumulation due to its very low log Kow of 0.37. Thus, acetylene is considered to be not PBT/vPvB.
