Description of key information
The melting point of diphenyl carbonate was addressed on a Weight of Evidence basis. The data available reported a range of values from 70 to 88 °C; the value of 78.8 °C (Buysch, 2002) was selected to be the key value for classification and risk assessment purposes as it is considered to be suitably representative.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Melting / freezing point at 101 325 Pa:
- 78.8 °C
Additional information
The melting point of diphenyl carbonate is considered to be 78.8 °C (at ambient pressure), based on a weight of evidence approach using five studies.
All the data were from peer reviewed sources; therefore all were awarded a reliability score of 2 in accordance with the criteria for assessing data quality as set forth by Klimisch et al. (1997).
The first value is taken from Ullmann´s Encyclopaedia of Industrial Chemistry and identifies the melting point at 78.8 °C.
The next value is taken from the Handbook Register in Beilstein. Several melting points in the range 70 to 88 °C are reported.
The third value is taken from the Merck Index. This identifies the melting point as 80 to 81 °C.
The fourth value is taken from the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, which identifies the melting point as 83 °C.
The final value is taken from Hawley’s Condensed Chemical Dictionary, which identifies the melting point as 78 °C.
