First-aid measures

General information:

Show this safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance.

Following inhalation:

Move immediately to fresh air, avoid exertion and seek medical attention. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.

Following skin contact:

Remove immediately all contaminated clothing, including footwear. Flush skin and hair for at least 15 minutes with running water (and soap if available). In case of long-term exposure to concentrated substance: Dab affected area with pulp (dry or saturated with PEG 400), then flush affected area with running water and soap.

Following eye contact:

Rinse thoroughly with plenty of water and keep eye wide open while rinsing. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention.

Following ingestion:

Rinse mouth. Give 1 - 2 glasses of water to drink. Do NOT induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs spontaneously, keep head below hips to prevent aspiration into lungs. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention.

Protection for first-aiders:

Use personal protective equipment.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media:

Carbon dioxide (CO2), foam, water, powder.

Unsuitable extinguishing media for safety reasons:

Water jet.

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture:

Combustible. Vapors heavier than air. Forms explosive mixtures with air on intense heating. Development of hazardous combustion gases or vapors possible in the event of fire.

Advice for firefighters

Special protective equipment:

Do not stay in dangerous zone without self-contained breathing apparatus.

Further information:

Prevent fire-fighting water from entering surface water or groundwater.

Accidental release measures

Use personal protective equipment. Avoid inhalation of dust. Ensure supply of fresh air in enclosed rooms.

Environmental precautions:

Prevent product from entering sewerage system, surface water or groundwater.

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up:

Take up dry. Forward for disposal in accordance with local regulations. Clean up affected area. Avoid generation of dust.

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling

Measures to prevent fire:

Substance is combustible. Provide firefighting equipment. Eliminate all ignition sources (no smoking, sparks or flames in immediate area). Take measures to prevent electric charging.

Precautions for safe handling:

Ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid generation of dust. Wear personal protective equipment.

Comply with general hygiene measures such as:

- Eating, drinking and smoking should be prohibited in areas where this material is handled, stored and processed.

- Workers should wash hands and face after usage.

- Remove contaminated clothing and protective equipment before entering eating areas.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities:

Keep container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place at +15 °C – +25 °C.

Exposure controls

Personal protective equipment:

Protective clothing must be in good condition and should be selected specifically for the working place, depending on concentration and quantity of the hazardous substances handled. The resistance of the protective clothing to chemicals should be ascertained with the respective supplier.

Respiratory protection:

Required when dusts or fumes are generated.

Suitable respiratory protection for higher concentrations or long-term effect: Combination filter device EN141; Type AP2.

Hand protection:

Replace gloves immediately when torn or any change in appearance (dimension, colour, flexibility, etc.) is noticed.

Use in full contact:

Glove material:       nitrile rubber

Layer thickness:       0.4 mm

Breakthrough time:       > 480 min.

Use in splash contact:

Glove material:       nitrile rubber

Layer thickness:       0.4 mm

Breakthrough time:       > 480 min.

The protective gloves to be used must to the specifications of EC directive 89/686/EEC and the resultant standard EN374, for example KCL for example KCL 730 Camatril. The breakthrough times stated above were determined by KCL in laboratory tests acc. to EN374 with samples of the recommended glove types. Observe glove manufacturer's instructions concerning penetrability and breakthrough time.

Eye protection:

Safety glasses with side-shields (frame goggles) (EN 166).

General safety and hygiene measures:

When using, do not eat, drink or smoke.

Remove and wash contaminated clothing before re-use.

Application of skin-protective barrier cream recommended. Wash hands before breaks and after working with substance.

Further information:

For more detailed information on exposure controls, please see the attached exposure scenarios.

Stability and reactivity

Stable under normal storage conditions and in organic solvents. Benzophenone does not contain any functional groups that are susceptible to dissociation.

Possibility of hazardous reactions: Violent reactions possible with strong oxidizing agents.

Conditions to avoid: Strong heating.

Incompatible materials: None incompatible materials known.

Harzadous decomposition products: None when used as directed. Thermal decomposition will lead to the release of carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2).

Disposal considerations

Material:

Material may be recyclable. If disposed or incinerated follow local regulations. Don’t use the sewerage system for disposal of this substance.

Packaging:

Uncontaminated packaging can be re-used.

Packs that cannot be cleaned should be disposed of in the same manner as the contents.
