Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
water solubility
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
1954
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Study well documented, meets generally accepted scientific principles, acceptable for assessment
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
reference to same study
Qualifier:
no guideline followed
Guideline:
other:
Deviations:
not specified
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Excess recrystallized p-aminophenol was added to previously boiled distilled water ( to expel dissolved oxygen) in a 200 ml flask placed in a thermostated oil-bath. The system was again boiled by evacuation ( to remove oxygen in the vapor phase), sealed off and allowed to equilibrate with occasional hand agitation. Samples were taken in a tared pipet and weighed, and the amine content was determined by the nitrate procedure.
GLP compliance:
not specified
Type of method:
flask method
Water solubility:
ca. 0.6 - ca. 0.65 other: weight %
Temp.:
25 °C
Remarks on result:
other: solubility increases with temperature

Additional values based on temperature gradient graph:

0.39% @ 13 C;

0.80 % @ 30 C;

1.5% @ 50 C;

4.7% @ 80 C

Conclusions:
Interpretation of results (migrated information): soluble (1000-10000 mg/L)
Substance is soluble in water at 0.65% at 24 C.

Description of key information

Water solubility at 0.65% at 24C (6500 mg/l)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
6 500 mg/L
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

One key study was included from a published study and three supporting endpoint records all from well known reference manuals.

The key study result from experimental data from literature was reported as 0.65% at 24C ( 6500 mg/L). This was referenced in a secondary supporting study also.. Two other supporting studies from secondary reference manuals reported water solubility as 11,000 mg/L at 0C and 15.75 g/L at 20C. All values fall into the soluble or very soluble range. It is concluded that based on this data that 4 -aminophenol is soluble in water.
