Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Freshwater
Potamogeton pectinatus: NOEC=0.010 mg/l

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for freshwater plants:
0.01 mg/L

Additional information

1. European Union Risk Assessment Report of Acrolein (EU, 2001)

In tests with Potamogeton nodosus and Potamogeton pectinatusfoliar damage of aquatic macrophytes exposed to acrolein is determined. NOECs of 100 and 10 µg/l, respectively, are reported for the two species. Several other tests with macrophytes have been performed in order to control the efficacy of acrolein as aquatic biocide and are considered not to be directly useful in the context of the current risk assessment. For this reason the results of these tests will only be used as supportive information.

Marine plants

Toxicity data for marine plants are not available.

2. Agreement with further international Reports and Studies published after finalisation of the EU Risk Assessment Report 2001

None

3. Substantial disagreements in comparison to further international Reports to European Union Risk Assessment Report 2001

None

4. Additional aspects in further international Reports

WHO (2002): According to many field trials on the efficiency of acrolein as a pesticide, most submerged aquatic weeds and algae are sensitive. When acrolein is used to clear unwanted vegetation from irrigation canals, its effective dose range is 1–15 mg/litre over an exposure period of 0.25–8 h.”

5. Additional information in newer Studies, not included in the European Union Risk Assessment Report 2001 or further cited international reports

None

6. Conclusions

In tests with Potamogeton nodosus and Potamogeton pectinatus foliar damage of aquatic macrophytes exposed to acrolein is determined. The lowest NOEC of  10 µg/l was reported for Potamogeton pectinatus. When acrolein is used to clear unwanted vegetation from irrigation canals, its effective dose range is 1–15 mg/litre over an exposure period of 0.25–8 h.
