Description of key information

Under the conditions of this acute fish toxicity study on zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio) the observed and calculated endpoints for the effect of EMI-DBS were the following:

The 24h, 48h, 72h and 96h LC50 value: 17.85 mg/L (with 95% conf. limits: 12.00–24.75)

The 96h LC100 value: 20.40 mg/L

The 96h No-Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC): 10.59 mg/L

The 96h Lowest Observed Effect Concentration (LOEC): 20.40 mg/L

In accordance with EU CLP criteria, it can be concluded that the test substance is not a short-term toxin to fish, however it can be classified as a Chronic Aquatic Toxin of Category 3.

Additional information

A study was conducted on the registered substance to determine the short-term toxicity of the substance to freshwater fish. The short-term toxicity of the test substance was determined in accordance with the OECD Guideline for Testing of Chemicals 203. The acute toxicity of EMI-DBS was assessed with acute fish toxicity test on Zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio), over an exposure period of 96 hours in a static system. Based on the results of the preliminary range-finding test five test concentrations in a geometric series with a separation factor of 2.0 and one untreated control were tested in the main experiment. The nominal concentrations of test item used in the main experiment were: 6.25; 12.5; 25.0; 50.0 and 100 mg/L. The corresponding measured geometric mean test item concentrations were: 4.43; 10.59; 20.40; 38.20 and 78.10 mg/L. Test concentrations was analytically determined at the start and at the end of the test. As the measured concentrations deviated more that 20 per cent from the nominal in all cases, biological results are based on measured geometric mean concentrations. One aquarium was used in each test group and one in the control group. Each aquarium comprised seven fish and five litre test solution. The LC50 values of the test item were calculated using Probit analysis by SPSS PC+ software. The NOEC and LOEC and LC100 values were determined from the raw data. All achievable validity criteria were met during this study.
