The assessment is based on the data currently available. New studies, based on the category review and the final decisions issued for some of the category substances, which are also relevant for this assessment, are currently being conducted. The hazard assessment with respect to aquatic toxicity will be updated once all ongoing studies have been finalised.
The long-term toxicity of Alcohols, C8-10, ethoxylated, sulfates, sodium salts to aquatic invertebrates was assessed in a weight of evidence approach based on the grouping of substances (category approach).
For the assessment of toxicity of the target substance, a category read-across to Alcohols, C8-10, ethoxylated, sulfates, ammonium salts was conducted.
The chronic toxicity of the Alcohols, C8-10, ethoxylated, sulfates, ammonium salts to aquatic invertebrates was tested in a GLP guideline study conducted according to OECD 211. Cu-free tap water according to OECD guideline 211 sourced from the Schmallenberg district water production plants was used as test medium. Juvenile Daphnia magna were exposed the test substance in a semi-static test system for 21 days. The nominal test substance concentrations were 0.51, 1.13, 2.48, 5.45, and 12 mg/L. The substance concentrations in freshly prepared and aged test solution were analytically verified by liquid chromatography (LC) and tandem mass spectrometry detection (LC-MS/MS). The time weighted average (TWA) concentrations were 0.45, 1.03, 2.33, 5.27, and 11.75 mg/L. The effects on growth and survival as well as reproductive performance were investigated in the test. The substance did not affect survival, growth or time of first brood of adult Daphnia. A concentrations related effect on the reproduction rate was observed. The determined NOEC was 5.3 mg/L (measured, TWA) based on reproduction.
