Aquatic toxicity studies in fish, invertebrates, algae and microorganisms were performed according to standard guidelines to evaluate the toxicity potential of Reactive Black 039. Three toxicity studies in fish were performed and the LC50 value noted at the end of 96 hour exposure period to the test substance was >1000 mg/L. In a test conducted to evaluate toxicity to daphnids, showed 48-hour EC50 value as 183.1 mg/l.

72-hours EC50 (Biomass) and EC50 (Growth rate) for structurally similar substance, FAT 45168/A was found to be clearly higher than 100 mg test substance/L when based on the real toxic effect.

For microorganisms, studies conducted using sludge from a domestic waste-water treatment plant reported an 3-hour IC50 of >320 mg/L.

Based on the test data available across the three trophic levels (LC50 and EC50 >100 mg/L), Reactive Brown 039 can be classified as having low toxicity to aquatic organisms.
