Preliminary TGA

From 300°C upwards the weight of the sample decreased significantly. At 367°C, the sample weight had decreased by 25%. After the experiment, a brown/black residue was observed on the lid of the sample container and a brown/black residue remained in the sample container

DSC

With all experiments, an exothermic decomposition effect starting at 150°C was observed. After the experiments, a brown/black residue remained at the bottom of the sample container and some residue was observed at the outside of the sample lid. The sample lid was opened due to pressure.

Since the extrapolated onset temperature of the exothermic decomposition is below 500°C and the exothermic decomposition energy is more than 500 J/g, the test substance was considered potentially explosive, therefore, additional testing was carried out.

Interpretation of results:
non explosive
Conclusions:
The test substance was determined to be non-explosive.
Executive summary:

During the DSC screening test, exothermic decomposition of the test substance was observed at a temperature of 193°C (exothermic decomposition energy: 937 J/g). In the full test, it was determined that the substance is not explosive when exposed to thermal stress or to mechanical stress (by shock). Therefore, OS2600 should be considered to present no danger of explosion. The study was performed in accordance with EC A.14, UN and EPA OPPTS 830.6316 guidelines and according to the principles of GLP.

Result:

Remarks:
Not explosive when exposed to mechanical stress by shock.

Thermal sensitivity - With regard to thermal sensitivity, none of the tests resulting in an explosion or vigorous reaction. None of the tubes showed a deformation or had burst into fragments. The test substance is not explosive when exposure to thermal stress.

Mechanical sensitivity by shock - A 10 kg mass was dropped from 0.4 m height on the test substance. In none of the 6 tests this resulted in visual changes in test substance consistency. No (traces of) vigorous reactions were observed. From this it was concluded that the test substance does not react under mechanical stress by shock. The test substance is not explosive when exposed to mechanical stress by shock.

Interpretation of results:
non explosive
Conclusions:
The test substance was considered to present no danger of explosion.
Executive summary:

The explosive property test was performed in accordance with EEC Method A.14 to determine whether the test item presents a danger of explosion when submitted to the effect of a flame (thermal sensitivity), or to shock (mechanical sensitivity). None of the tests resulted in an explosion or vigorous reaction in the thermal sensitivity test. None of the tubes showed a deformation or had burst into fragments. In the mechanical sensitivity test by shock, no (traces of) vigorous reactions were observed after dropping a 10 kg mass from 0.4 meter height on the substance. It was concluded that the substance is not explosive when exposed to thermal stress nor mechanical stress by shock.

Description of key information

The test substance presents no danger of explosion.

Similarly, for MPKO, the hydrolysis product of OS2600, the substance presents no danger of explosion.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

Key study: The explosive properties of OS-2600 was assessed in a study performed in accordance with EU Method A.14. It was determined that the substance is not explosive when exposed to thermal stress or to mechanical stress (by shock). Therefore, OS2600 should be considered to present no danger of explosion.

Supporting study: The explosive properties of the analogue substance MPKO were assessed in a study performed in accordance with EEC Method A.14. The substance presents no danger of explosion when submitted to the effect of a flame (thermal sensitivity), or to shock (mechanical sensitivity), and therefore it was determined to be non-explosive.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on available data, the substance presents no danger of explosion when submitted to the effect of a flame (thermal sensitivity), or to shock (mechanical sensitivity) and therefore, it is not classified in accordance with CLP Regulation (EC) no. 1272/2008.
