Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Based on animal carcinogenesis studies, benzoin has been classified as noncarcinogens. The genetic toxicity of the compound has been thoroughly evaluated in short-term in vitro bioassays. Genetic activity profiles and corresponding data listings and summaries are presented for benzoin. Generally weak positive responses were obtained with benzoin only in mammalian cell mutagenesis and cell transformation assays. Since the chemical structure of benzoin do not suggest the potential for genotoxicity these responses may be associated with nonspecific toxicity. The overwhelming majority of short-term test data suggest that, in accordance with animal cancer data, benzoin is not genotoxic.
