The substance was tested on aquatic organisms of different trophic levels (invertebrates, fish, algae and aquatic plants).

 

Fish were the most sensitive organisms when exposed to the test item. Acute toxicity tests according to OECD 203 were performed with bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus, 96 h), fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas, 96 h), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, 96 h) and carp (Cyprinus carpio, 48 h). The lowest derived acute effect value in fish was determined in L. macrochirus with an LC50 (96h) of 0.26 mg/L (mean measured).

Two short-term toxicity studies assessed the effects on aquatic invertebrates. In an acute toxicity test according to OECD 235, immobility of larvae of Chironomus riparius (1st instar) was significantly affected by the test item, resulting in an EC50 (48 h) of 2.24 mg a.s./L (nominal). An acute toxicity test on the freshwater invertebrate, Daphnia magna, revealed no toxic effects of the substance up to the limit of water solubility.

The long-term effects of the substance towards fish were examined in a 35-day early-life stage toxicity test with fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) according to OECD 210. A NOEC (35d) of 0.01 mg/L (mean measured) was determined, the lowest derived chronic value.

Long-term toxicity testing with Daphnia magna (21 days) resulted in a NOEC of 0.4 mg/L (mean measured).

 

The toxicity of the substance to aquatic algae was investigated in four GLP studies. The lowest derived effect values were determined in a study performed according to OECD 201 with freshwater algae Scenedesmus subspicatus. The 72-h ErC50 was > 3 mg/L (nominal). The NOEC (72 h) was determined to be 0.375 mg/L (nominal).

Toxicity to aquatic plants was investigated in a study performed according to OECD 221 with duckweed Lemna gibba. Derived IC50 values based on growth rate inhibition (frond number and dry weight) was > 4.07 mg/L (mean measured). Growth rate NOEC values, based on frond number and dry weight, were 0.0390 mg/L (mean measured) and 1.36 mg/L (mean measured), respectively.

Additionally, the effect of the substance on the respiration rate of microorganisms (activated sludge) was examined in a limit test at 1000 mg/L. In this test system, no inhibitory effects of the test substance on microorganisms were observed. This result is supported by the results of the inhibition control in a biodegradation study according to OECD 301 B. The toxicity control with a test item concentration of 25.4 mg/L TOC reached a biodegradation rate of > 35% within 14 days (46% after 14 d). Thus, the test substance is not inhibitory to microorganisms.
