Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

A key study is presented which determines the growth inhibition of 2-chloropropionic acid to the alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata over a 72 hour exposure period. The EC50 was determined to be 73.4 mg/l and the No Observed Effect Concentration was observed as 25 mg/l.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
73.4 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
25 mg/L

Additional information

In a key study a growth inhibition test of 2 -chloropropionic acid to to the alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata over a 72 hour exposure period was performed. The study was conducted according to OECD guideline 201 (2006), Alga Growth Inhibition Test, Annex V EEC C3, Algal Inhibition Test and it was performed to GLP. The study was reported as having been conducted without any deviations from the protocol. The ECx values were measured (where x = 10, 20 and 50) at 0-48 hours and 0-72 hours both by yield and by growth rate. The EC50 (72 hours at 23 degrees C) [by growth rate] was determined to be 73.4 mg/l and the NOEC (0 -72 hours at 23 degrees C) [by growth rate] was observed to be 25 mg/l.

The results of this study suggest that 2 -chloropropionic acid may require classifying for acute environmental effects - R52/53 or Aquatic Chronic 3 (H412), but as the substance is readily biodegradable (see Section 5.2) classification for environmental hazard is not required.
