Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

"Neutralisation and reduction products of bauxite residue from refinement process" is poorly soluble in water with maximum releases of aluminium at 0.5 mg/L after 28 days. In addition, the substance is inorganic and cannot be dissolved in organic solvents. Therefore, in accordance with REACH Annex XI, section 2, the sediment toxicity testing was waived since it is technically not possible to conduct the study as a consequence of the properties of the substance. This is because the OECD guidelines 218, 225, 233, and 239 for testing of chemicals on sediment organisms requires adequate solubility of the test substance.

Furthermore, aluminium which is the major element released from "Neutralisation and reduction products of bauxite residue from refinement process" is an integral part of the eath crust and ubiquitous in nature. Hence, the substance is not expected to make significant contribution to the existing background levels of the released elements in the sediment.
