Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Enzymes - Octanol-water partition coefficient

Justifications and discussions

Category definition:
Because all enzymes are built up of the combination of the same 20 common amino acids, the physical and chemical characteristics are very similar for different enzymes, and hence, read-across from other enzymes should be fully applicable.
Category description:
Subtilisin, glucoamylase, cellulase and lipase have been tested and in general all enzymes are primarily in the water phase due to the high water solubility resulting in very low logPow values. Glucoamylase had the highest logPow value detected.

REPORTING FORMAT FOR THE CATEGORY APPROACH
[Please provide information for all of the points below. Should you wish to add supporting documents, please attach the document(s) in the field 'Reports', and indicate this in the appropriate point.]

1. CATEGORY HYPOTHESIS
All enzymes are built up of the combination of the same 20 common amino acids, and the physical and chemical characteristics are very similar for different enzymes, and hence, read-across from other enzymes should be fully applicable.

2. CATEGORY JUSTIFICATION
The logPow value has been determined for gluco-amylase, cellulase, lipase and subtilisin and in all cases the logPow value was below 0, the logPow value from our studies and literature studies was found to be between -3.1 to -1.3.

3. APPLICABILITY DOMAIN OF THE CATEGORY
All enzyme substances
