RESULTS
Safety pre-test 1
Heated on a magnesia groove over a Bunsen burner the test burnt with a yellow flame and melted a bit. A black-brown residue (caramelised) remained.
Beaten with a hammer on the anvil no reaction could be observed.
Safety pre-test 2
No deformation of the crucible was observed. The mass of the crucible was recorded with 623.73 mg. A black residue was left in the crucible. The sealing was black coloured.
Calibration
After calibration with indium and zinc the measurement of indium yielded the following values:
Expected melting point |
Measured melting point |
Expected heat flow |

156.6± 1.0 °C |
156.28 °C |

DSC Screening of the Test Item
An endothermic event was observed which can be stated as a solid to solid transition of the test item at 82.99 °C.
An exothermic event was observed at 220.48 °C.
The energy was -23.47 J/g and therefore less than 300 J/g therefore this event is not subject to the classification procedures for self-reactive substances.
An exothermic event was observed at 509.83 °C.
The energy was -22.07 J/g and therefore less than 300 J/g therefore this event is not subject to the classification procedures for self-reactive substances.
EVALUATION AND DISCUSSION
During the DSC run an endothermic event was observed and two exothermic events.
In accordance to the determination of the melting and boiling point, no melting was observed till 400 °C. Therefore the first event can be stated as solid to solid transition.
The slightly exothermic events showed energy far below 300 J/g and therefore the test item is no subject to the classification procedures for self-reactive substances and the acceptance procedures for Class 1 explosives need not to be applied.
The measurement of indium after calibration met the validity criteria. Therefore, the result of the study is considered valid.
