Description of key information

In the assessment of calcium neodecanoate, read-across to the assessment entities soluble calcium substances and neodecanoic acid is applied since the ions of calcium neodecanoate determine its fate and toxicity in the environment. The potential for chronic toxicity of calcium to aquatic invertebrates is very low, further supported by the fact that calcium is added to standard test media. According to the QSAR-based outcome of the model ECOSAR (EPI Suite 4.0), neodecanoic acid has a low potential for chronic toxicity to aquatic invertebrates since the chronic value for daphnids (ChV = 10^([log (LOEC x NOEC)]/2)) was estimated with 1.7 mg/L. Also, a 21 -d NOEC of 4.78 mg/L (reproduction) was determined in a chronic toxicity test with Daphnia magna and neoheptanoic acid (a structural analogue of neodecanoate). In sum, the potential of calcium neodecanoate for chronic toxicity to aquatic invertebrates is assumed to be low.
