Biodegradation potential of the test substance FAT 31016/I was investigated in a study conducted according to the modified AFNOR test, Guideline OECD 301 A, May 12, 1981. Mixture of polyvalent bacteria collected from the sewage treatment plant (ARA Rhein) was used as test organism for inoculation. The level of biodegradation was calculated as the percentage elimination of the organic carbon. Initial test concentration was determined to be 40 mg/L DOC (nominal). The exposure was carried out for the duration of 28 days. However, 0 % biodegradation was observed for FAT 31016/A, however for the reference substance glucose, the biodegradation was calculated to be 94 %. Hence, FAT 31016/I can be concluded to have no biodegradation under test conditions.

The biochemical oxygen demand of FAT 31016/P is determined by measuring the dissolved oxygen concentration before and after 5 days incubation at 20 °C in different test concentrations diluted in water saturated with dissolved oxygen that contains a seed of microorganisms. The test was carried out according to ISO 5815 Second Edition 1989-08-01 (E) corresponding to92/96/EEC C.5. The test substance was tested in concentrations from about 6 to 800 mg/l. The reference substance D(+)-Glucose / L-Glutamic acid was tested in a concentration of 20 ml/I. The BOD5 of FAT- 31016/P was 0 mg O2/g, while the BOD5 of the reference substance was 182 mg O2/l. In another test, the COD of FAT 31061/P was determined to be 1427 mg O2/g. The resultant BOD:COD ratio was found to be zero, indicating the substance is not readily biodegradable.

A pre-determinated amount of the test substance FAT - 31016/P dissolved in water is oxidized by potassium dichromate in a strong sulphuric acid medium with silver sulphate as a catalyst under reflux for 2 hours. The residual dichromate is determined by titration with standardized ferrous ammonium sulphate. The test was carried out according to DEV DIN 38'409 - H 41-1 (1980) corresponding to 92/96/EEC C.6. The test substance was tested with a sample weight of 2.5 mg. The reference substance Potassium hydrogen phthalate solution was tested in a concentration of 20 ml/I. The inherent biodegradability of FAT - 31016/P was determined in a 28 days Zahn-Wellens - Test according to the OECD Guideline for Testing of Chemicals, No. 302B, Paris 1981 and the EEC-Directive, L133 (pp. 99-105) Volume 31, May 88. The test substance was tested in concentration of 25 mg/l DOC. The reference substance Diethylenglycol was also tested in a concentration of 150 mg/l DOC. The bioelimination of the test substance FAT - 31016/P after 28 days was determined to be 55.2 %, while the bioelimination of the reference substance after 16 days was 98.8 %. Hence, FAT 31016/P was concluded to be not inherently biodegradable.

FAT 31016/I was concluded to have no biodegradation under the test conditions in a ready biodegradability test conducted in accordance with AFNOR test, OECD Guideline 301A. The bioelimination of the test substance FAT - 31016/P after 28 days was determined to be 55.2 %, in a modified Zahn-Wellens test conducted according to OECD Guideline 302B. Hence, FAT 31016/P was concluded to be not inherently biodegradable. In another set of studies investigating BOD5 and COD, the BOD5 of FAT 31016/P was determined to be 0 mg O2/g, while the COD was 1427 mg O2/g. Hence, the BOD5/COD equals 0 indicating the substance to be not readily biodegradable. For FAT 31016/I, BOD5/COD ratio was again 0/1440 = 0, further supporting the conclusion that the substance is not readily biodegradable. Hence, taking into account the substance can be concluded to be not readily biodegradable, however, to possess the potential for inherent, primary biodegradability.
