Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

There are no experimental data available for the test item. Alternatively, a read-across approach is applied. The following values were obtained for the respective source substance:

NOEC = 20 mg LAS Na/kg dry weight

EC50 = 6.2 mg LAS Na/kg dry weigh

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Short-term EC50 or LC50 for soil macroorganisms:
6.2 mg/kg soil dw
Long-term EC10, LC10 or NOEC for soil macroorganisms:
20 mg/kg soil dw

Additional information

No experimental data on toxicity is available for the test item. Alternatively, experimental data for one source substances is available and a read-across approach is applied. Please refer to read-across justification document attached in IUCLID Section 13. For further supporting information please refer to respective REACH registration dossier of each source substance.

Source substance 2 (LAS NA, CAS 68411-30-3)

In a 14 day long term toxicity test to soil macroorganisms, earthworms (Eisenia fetida) were exposed to Benzenesulfonic acid (C10-13-alkyl derivs., sodium salts, CAS 68411-30-3) in a laboratory study with artificial soil. Nominal test concentrations were 63, 125, 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg dw. The test animals were examined for mortality, behaviour, health, and reproduction on days 7 and 14. 5% mortality was seen at the highest concentration. Effects to health were seen at the 500 and 1000 mg/kg dw concentrations. The 14 -day LC50 was > 1000 mg/kg dw (nominal), and the NOEC was 250 mg/kg dw (nominal). This test is according to the OECD Guideline 207.

In a 21 day long term toxicity test to soil macroorganisms, annelids (Enchytraeus albidus, Aporrectodea caliginosa, Aporrectodea longa) were exposed to Benzenesulfonic acid (C10-13-alkyl derivs., sodium salts, CAS 68411-30-3) in a laboratory study with agricultural soil. Nominal test concentrations were 20, 40, 80, 200 and 400 mg/kg. The 21-day EC10 to E. albidus was 6.2 mg/kg dry weight (nominal), NOEC was 20 mg/kg dry weight (nominal) and LOEC 40 mg/kg dry weight (nominal). This toxicity study is classified as acceptable, as it is well documented and meets generally accepted scientific principles, according to ISO 11268-2.

In a 28 day long term toxicity test to soil macroorganisms, earthworms (A. caliginosa, E. crypticus) were exposed to Benzenesulfonic acid (C10-13-alkyl derivs., sodium salts, CAS 68411-30-3) in a laboratory study with natural soil. Nominal test concentrations were 10, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120 mg/kg soil, measured concentrations 0.65, 7.1, 26.3, 45.5, 60.3, 92.4, 102.7 mg/kg soil. EC10 values based on reproduction were 46 mg/kg soil for A. caliginosa, and more than 120 mg/kg soil for E. crypticus. This toxicity study is classified as acceptable, as it is well documented and meets generally accepted scientific principles, similar to ISO 16387.

In a long term toxicity test to soil macroorganisms, annelids (Eisenia foetida, Lumbricus terrestris, Aporrectodea caliginosa, Aporrectodea longa, Enchytraeus albidus) were exposed to Benzenesulfonic acid (C10-13-alkyl derivs., sodium salts, CAS 68411-30-3). Details of nominal and measured concentrations are not available in the study report. The lowest NOEC for Reproduction (Platynothrus peltifer) was 320 mg/kg dry weight, EC10 for reproduction was 6.2 mg/kg dry weight (Enchytraeus albidus) and EC50 for reproduction was 40.5 mg/kg dry weight (Enchytraeus albidus). Values were extracted from a variety of original references.
