Description of key information

Data available on the constituents, on a mixture containing 87.1% of reaction mass and handling considerations are used in a weight-of-evidence approach in order to conclude that reaction mass of dicerium trisulphide and dilanthanum trisulphide does not require a classification with respect to flammable properties.

Flammability:

From flammability tests (EU Method A.10), dicerium trisulphide and dilanthanum trisulphide are concluded to be not highly flammable. A.10 test results are generally used to determine the classification under DSD system, while UN N.1 test results are generally used to determine the classification under CLP system. The main difference between both tests is the presence (UN N.1) or absence (A. 10) of a wetted zone. Under CLP, this wetted zone is intended to select the right classification categories for flammable solids. However, if the solid is not flammable, the wetted zone is not used. Therefore, as dicerium trisulphide and dilanthanum trisulphide are not flammable, having or not a wetted zone has no importance and A. 10 test results can be used to conclude on classification under both DSD and CLP systems.

Using a weight-of-evidence based on the data available on its constituents, reaction mass of dicerium trisulphide and dilanthanum trisulphide is concluded to be not highly flammable.

Pyrophoricity:

In the daily use and handling of reaction mass of dicerium trisulphide and dilanthanum trisulphide during which continuous exposure to air can occur, no spontaneous ignition is observed. The absence of structural alerts furthermore confirms that it is highly unlikely that the substance has pyrophoric properties.

Flammability in contact with water:

- Under conditions where reaction mass of dicerium trisulphide and dilanthanum trisulphide is in contact with water (ex. aquatic ecotoxicity test), no ignition and/or liberation of flammable gases is observed.

- The absence of structural alerts furthermore confirms that it is highly unlikely that the substance is flammable in contact with water.

- In addition, a flammability test in contact with water was performed on a mixture containing 87.1% reaction mass of dicerium trisulphide and dilanthanum trisulphide and other compounds known to be not flammable in contact with water. This test concluded that no classification is needed for the mixture. A similar result was obtained with an analogue mixture containing 87% dicerium trisulphide; confirming this family of rare earth sulphides present similar physico-chemical profiles.

---> Based on this pool of evidence, reaction mass of dicerium trisulphide and dilanthanum trisulphide is thus concluded to be non flammable in contact with water.
