Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Silane is a gas at standard temperature and pressure, with a reported melting point of -185°C at 1013 hPa and boiling point of -112°C at 1013 hPa. The requirement to conduct many of the physicochemical property studies have been waived because silane:

- is a gas at standard temperature and pressure

- is inorganic

- is a pyrophoric substance

A density value of 1.33 kg/m3 at 20°C was calculated for the substance on the basis of a molecular weight of 32.12 g/mol and Ideal Gas Laws. The vapour pressure of the substance is expected to be greater than the limit of measurement, i.e. >1.0E+05 Pa at 20°C due to the boiling point of <30°C at 1013 hPa.

The substance is classified as Flammable Gas 1A, extremely flammable gas, according to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.

On the basis of structural examination, the substance is not considered to be surface active; it is not oxidising and does not have any of the chemical structures that are associated with explosive properties.

Given the reactivity of the substance and the high levels of control required for handling it, the lack of values such as water solubility and log Kow usually required for exposure assessment is not considered critical.
