Additional information

Since no experimental studies investigating the toxicity of 1,3-Propanediol, 2,2-dimethyl-, C5-9 carboxylates (CAS 85711-80-4) to algae are available for this endpoint, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read across to the structurally related source substances Heptanoic acid, ester with 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol (CAS 68855-18-5) and 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid mixed tetraesters with PE and valeric acid (CAS 131459-39-7) was conducted. This read-across is justified in detail in the overall summary (IUCLID section 6.1) and within the analogue justification in IUCLID Section 13.

The first study with with Heptanoic acid, ester with 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol (CAS 68855-18-5) was performed as a limit test according to OECD Guideline 201 and GLP, in a static system (Vryenhoef, 2012). During 72 h, the test organism Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was exposed to the nominal test concentration of 100% v/v, corresponding to a measured concentration of 0.0065 mg/L. This was the highest attainable concentration, due to the poor solubility of the test substance. No significant effects on growth or biomass of algae were observed during the study and the EC50 (72 h) was reported to be > 0.0065 mg/L. The NOEC was reported to be ≥ 0.0065 mg/L.

Similarly the second study with 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid mixed tetraesters with PE and valeric acid (CAS 131459-39-7) was performed as a limit test according to OECD Guideline 201 and GLP, in a static system (Vryenhoef, 2012). During 72 h, the test organism Desmodesmus subspicatus was exposed to filtered test material of a nominal test concentration of 100 mg/L. Analysis of the 100 mg/L loading rate WSF showed the measured concentration to be 13-18% at test start and 2-6% at test end. However due to the UVCB characteristic of the substance results were referred to nominal concentration. No significant effects on growth or biomass of algae were observed during the study and the EL50 (72 h) was reported to be > 100 mg/L based on nominal concentration. The NOEC was reported to be ≥ 100 mg/L.

Based on the available results from these structurally related read-across substances (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which are characterized by a similar ecotoxicological profile and comparable structure, it can be concluded that 1,3-Propanediol, 2,2-dimethyl-, C5-9 carboxylates (CAS 85711-80-4) will not exhibit toxic effects on algae up to the limit of water solubility.
