Description of key information

FAT 45082 is considered to be not biodegradable.

Additional information

By the nature of their design and use, textile dyes are not intended to be readily biodegradable as this would assist in the rapid destruction of the dyestuff, rendering it unfit for purpose. There are ISO, European, American (AATCC) and national standards for the colour fastness of dyes. Dyes are required to have specific fastness properties. If the dyes were biodegradable, it would not be possible for them to have these fastness properties. As such, it is accepted that such substances are not readily biodegradable under relevant environmental conditions. A published study (Pagga & Brown, 1986) describes the results of the testing of 87 dyestuffs in short-term aerobic biodegradation tests. The authors of this publication concluded that dyestuffs are very unlikely to show any significant biodegradation in such tests and that 'there seems little point in carrying out such test procedures’ on dyestuffs.


Nevertheless, the test substance was investigated in a 28-day Modified MITI (II) - Test performed according to the OECD Guideline 302C (adopted 1981). As a result the substance was degraded only to 7 %.


Further tests to determine the COD and BOD5 of the test substance resulted in the following data:


A study carried out according to DIN 38409- H 41-1 (1980) corresponding to EEC Directive 92/69/ C.6. (1992), showed COD of 1789 mg O2/g.


Vat Black 65 was assessed for biodegradability over the years in the studies estimating BOD5 and COD:


FAT 45082/E- BOD5: 50 -100 mg/g O2; COD: 988.2 mg/g O2


FAT 45082/D- BOD5: 104 mg/g O2;COD: 1723 mg/g O2


FAT 45082/B- BOD5: 14 mg/g O2;COD: 1657 mg/g O2


 


In all these cases, the BOD5/COD quotient <0.5, therefore the substance is considered to be not readily biodegradable.


Taking the data available into account,FAT 45082 is considered to be notreadilybiodegradable.


Calculation of the BOD5/COD quotient resulted in values below 0.5, therefore the substance is not regarded as readily and rapidly biodegradable.


 


Taking all data generated with this test substance into account, the test substance FAT 45082 is considered to be not biodegradable.
